Grinding It Out at Otter Lake: SIKC Stop #2 Tests Every Angler

Stop #2 of the 2025 Southern Illinois Kayak Club season is officially in the books — and Otter Lake made sure to test every ounce of grit our anglers had. Between a stingy bite and rain that rolled in late, this one was a battle from start to finish. But as always, the SIKC crew showed up, stayed positive, and proved once again why this club is built different.

Despite the tough conditions, a few anglers managed to crack the code and put together solid bags on a day when every bite mattered.

Dalton Williams Finds the Winning Formula

Taking the win was Dalton Williams, who located fish shallow and relied on a crankbait to get the job done. Dalton’s ability to adjust and find a pattern when others struggled was key to his victory — and this win propels him back into the Angler of the Year lead as he looks to defend his title from last season.

The Return of Nate Barto

In second place, Nate Barto made a triumphant return to SIKC competition. After a few years away, Nate has stormed back with back-to-back Top-5 finishes, proving that his tournament instincts are as sharp as ever. With this momentum, he’s quickly becoming a major factor in the AOY race.

Consistency from Darren Hemker

Rounding out the Top 3, Darren Hemker once again demonstrated why he’s one of the most consistent anglers in the club. Fishing shallow wood with a worm, Darren had no problem finding bites — but the big upgrades just didn’t come his way this time. Still, another impressive showing from one of SIKC’s most reliable competitors.

Big Bass and Big Thanks

Dalton also earned the Heads Up Taxidermy Big Bass Award with a 19.75” fish. Huge thanks to Midwest Kayak Company for adding an extra $50 to the big-bass payout — we appreciate your continued support!

And don’t miss the latest Kayak Bass Connection Podcast, where the guys recap some of the wild stories from this event. You’ll definitely want to give it a listen!

Finally, a massive thank-you to all our sponsors for backing SIKC and helping us keep this trail thriving:

Otter Lake may have been stingy, but it showed the heart and determination that define our anglers. We’ll regroup, recharge, and be ready to go for Stop #3 at Sangchris Lake on June 7th, 2025. Tight lines — see you on the water!
